Craft and homework space for two
A few weeks ago I shared this homework/craft space over on Instagram and I had lots of questions about where products were from and people asking to see some more images. So today I am doing a more extensive tour of this little part of my home.
The idea behind this space
This area was created for two of my three boys. My third son is disabled and this sort of area wouldn’t work for him, he has other special places around the home instead :)
My boys are still only fairly young - 6 and 10 - and so they aren’t ready to sit upstairs in their bedrooms to do homework. They also have limited rooms in their bedrooms to have a spacious desk with room to spread out. In our rumpus/2nd living room we had this long stretch of wall that wasn’t really being used for anything. This room is where the boys spend most of their time at home. They watch TV in here, do their music practice, play on iPads and play board games. So it only seemed natural to make a place in this room where they could also draw and and be creative, but also where they could have their own space to sit quietly and do homework down the track (at the moment they both still do homework on the kitchen bench, but I don’t anticipate this being the case forever).
I also like the idea of their homework space being in a more open area, rather than up in their bedrooms. I would like to get used to them both having laptops for school and knowing what they are doing on them!!
My eldest son is a prolific and quite talented drawer. So I also wanted to create a space for him with lots of pencils and paper out on show so he would feel motivated to draw whenever he wanted, without the hassle of having to pull out equipment every time. He’s going through a phase of drawing sports cars at the moment. They are pretty good if I do say so myself :)
The design
I went with a design based on shades of green. I’m loving green at the moment and it’s quite on trend so there’s lots of nice products around. I made the area symmetrical, mainly for my own OCD reasons :) But I love how it has turned out. The little shelves from On the Sly are great for showing off craft creations or mini collections (are my kids the only ones who have mini collections of all random things?? At the moment we are collecting gem stones….). The shelf also has a little wooden peg at the bottom to hang headphones or other things. Each boy has his own green pencil cup with the things he uses most and then the toolbox full of coloured pencils and textas is for sharing.
In the draws they store their homework folders, plain paper, workbooks and other bits and pieces. These are mostly empty at the moment but I like the idea of them both having an area where they can organise their things as they get a bit older.
The products I used
Desks - IKEA trestle desks
Drawer units - the Alex units from IKEA
Chairs - from Clickon Furniture, but I think they have discontinued this colour :(
Table Lamps - Freedom Furniture
Green pencil cups - Mud Australia Ceramics
Wall shelves - On the Sly
Cactus Prints - Frame88
Circle Wall Light - Beacon Lighting
Tool box with pencils etc. - DesignStuff (RO Collection brand). Not sure they have this anymore but you can search RO toolbox elsewhere and see if you can find it.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this little tour of the boys’ space. Let me know what you think - would your kids like a space like this? Comment below and let me know.
