Build a design business that consistently makes $10,000 per month

Here’s how to build a design business that consistently makes $10,000 per month. ⬇️

1: Choose a niche to focus on

Why:

Becoming known for a specific niche will help you stand out in the crowd of designers. Your goal should be to become known as THE expert in that niche area.

Tip:

Choose a niche or specialisation where there are clients who have money to spend. Also make sure it’s a niche you enjoy (as this is going to be a lot of work!).

Some examples:

  • historic home restorations

  • designing for difficult sites/blocks (a good one for architects)

  • commercial design

  • luxury residential design

  • educational facility design

  • tiny homes design

  • restaurant design

2: Create 10-20 pieces of content every day across social media platforms

Why:

Consistent and frequent posting will keep you visible and top of mind for your audience. It brings awareness and recognition in a crowded market and will help you build your reputation as an expert in the niche you’ve chosen.

Posting a lot means your community will grow faster (assuming the content you share is helpful and valuable).

If you don’t know how to create good content - teach yourself (it’s important)

3: Create a helpful lead magnet that solves a problem about your topic

(NOTE: I said HELPFUL - not rubbish!)

Why:

A lead magnet is a value driven piece of content that you provide in return for an email address.

If your lead magnet is excellent and high value it will position you as an authority and build trust.

If your lead magnet is rubbish content that could be easily Googled you will lose trust.

So give away your BEST ideas for free. If you feel uncomfortable about how much you’ve shared - you’ve got it right.

4: Send a weekly newsletter

Why:

The lead magnet will bring you email addresses. The next step is to share weekly value via a regular newsletter.

This will help you build a relationship with your community over time. In the newsletter you should share your knowledge and educate your community about your niche.

A great way to get consistent with writing a weekly newsletter is to have a framework you use.

For example: Two Tuesday Tips or Friday Finds.

5: Start offering paid services

Why:

By consistently doing Steps 1-3 your community will begin to grow and, assuming the content you are putting out is helpful, people will start asking you for 1:1 help.

Now you have something to sell and can start making revenue.

Example:

  • your content attracts 10 genuine leads for the month

  • you book a paid design consultation (@$250/consultation) with 4 of those leads = $1,000

  • 2 of those clients want to work with you on their projects.

  • One project is a smaller job and your fees are $3,000

  • One project is a medium sized project and your fees are $6,000

  • Congratulations - you’ve just made $10,000 in a month!

6: Continue content creation even when busy with client work

Why:

What lots of designers do is they start working with the two clients they got in Step 5 above.

Because they get busy then then stop consistently posting content every day (Steps 1 to 4) - which is what helped them get the two clients in the first place.

This means their lead flow dries up and they have no new clients in the pipeline for when the current work is finished.

Instead - stay consistent with content creation even when you are busy with client work.

So here’s your path to $10,000 per month:

The more content you make >

The more leads you get >

The more clients you get >

The more money you make!

Being consistent with content creation and doing it even when you’re busy with client work is how you build a business that always makes $10K/month

When you break it down it’s honestly not as hard as you think.
